چکیده

We study D-dimensional polymerized membranes embedded in d dimensions using a selfconsistent screening approximation. It is exact for large d to order 1/d, for any d to order ǫ = 4−D and for d = D. For flat physical membranes (D = 2, d = 3) it predicts a roughness exponent ζ = 0.590. For phantom membranes at the crumpling transition the size exponent is ν = 0.732. It yields identical lower critical dimension for the flat phase and crumpling transition Dlc(d) = 2d d+1 (Dlc = √ 2 for codimension 1). For physical membranes with random quenched curvature ζ = 0.775 in the new T = 0 flat phase in good agreement with simulations. PACS: 64.60Fr,05.40,82.65Dp

Renormalization Theory for the Self-Avoiding Polymerized Membranes

We prove the renormalizability of the generalized Edwards model for self-avoiding polymerized membranes. This is done by use of a short distance multilocal operator product expansion, which extends the methods of local field theories to a large class of models with non-local singular interactions. This ensures the existence of scaling laws for crumpled self-avoiding membranes, and validates the...

Folding Transitions of Self-Avoiding Membranes.

Abstract: The phase structure of self-avoiding polymerized membranes is studied by extensive Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations. Several folding transitions from the flat to a collapsed state are found. Using a suitable order parameter and finite size scaling theory, these transitions are shown to be of first order. The phase diagram in the temperature-field plane is given. Self-avoiding Polymerized Membranes

Recent progresses in the understanding of the scaling behavior of self-avoiding flexible polymerized membranes (tethered manifolds) are reviewed (joint works with B. Duplantier and E. Guitter, and with K. Wiese). They rely on a new general renormalization group approach for a class of models with non-local singular interactions. This approach allows to prove the existence of a ǫ-expansion for t...

Grain-boundary instabilities and buckling in partially polymerized membranes.

We show that a network of quenched random grain boundaries, terminating in poly-merized patches containing excess disclinations, destabilizes the at phase of sparsely poly-merized membranes, in contrast to membranes completely polymerized in the liquid state. We argue that many of these grain boundaries will buckle, even in the absence of excess disclinity, leading to a glassy wrinkled phase co...

Principles of non-local field theories and their application to polymerized membranes

In these lecture notes, we give an overview about non-local field-theories and their application to polymerized membranes, i.e. membranes with a fixed internal connectivity. The main technical tool is the multi-local operator product expansion (MOPE), generalizing ideas from local field theories to the multi-local situation. These notes are largely inspired by: Kay Wiese, “Polymerized membranes...
